Protecting Yourself & Your Vehicle During Storm Season
Storm season can be wildly unpredictable. Severe winds, heavy rain, floods and even hail can have a serious impact on your motor vehicle and your finances, so it is important to be ready and protected.
Here are some steps that you can follow that won’t take too much time out of your day but will make sure that you and your vehicle are protected.
Stay Notified
Apps such as the Bureau of Meteorology app and the SES Assistance app provide live updates on extreme weather and natural disasters, downloading these to your devices will ensure that you are notified of any potential dangers and could be the difference between an undamaged car or an expensive bill.
Make A Plan
Work with whoever you live with to devise a plan that lays out all the steps you will need to take to protect yourself and your motor vehicle. Write down several safe spots that are easily accessible (won’t require you to drive through floodwaters), that are undercover, sheltered from the weather and are structurally sound. Always have a first-aid kit and extra water in your vehicle, you never know how long you may be required to stay at your safe spot and what dangers you may be faced with during your travels.
Check Your Cover
Arguably the easiest tip to follow on this list because you don’t even have to leave the house. BUY A HAIL COVER. I cannot stress this enough. They start at around $50 and can save you so much money in repair costs. Pro tip: make sure you buy one with padded sides so that every spot on your car has protection.
Check Your (Other) Cover
Prior to COVID, when was the last time you went more than seven days without using your car? Hailstorms, severe winds, and floods that cause even minor damage to your car can sometimes leave you without a vehicle for over a week. It is important to make sure that your insurance protects you and your vehicle from storm damage and will ensure that your out-of-pocket expenses don’t break the bank, getting you back on the road sooner.
